專輯收錄史特拉汶斯基（Igor Stravinsky, 1882-1971）三部最具代表性的作品：在音樂史上，《春之祭》佔有極其重有的地位。它是音樂歷史的轉捩點，代表著長久以來旋律與和聲重於一切的傳統也宣告瓦解，取而代之的是大量的不和諧音與變化多端的節奏。然而早在1909至10年間史特拉汶斯基為迪亞基列夫（Serge Diaghilev）所作的芭蕾舞劇《火鳥》，以及1910至11年間的《彼得洛希卡》中就已經傳達了這種改變的訊號。
專輯的指揮布列茲，既是指揮家、作曲家，也是音樂理論家。擅長指揮現代音樂作品，透過他的老師梅湘的引薦而認識史特拉汶斯基、巴托克，和新舊維也納學派的音樂世界。1952年布列茲首度與史特拉汶斯基見面，兩人成為好友。1958年布列茲開始指揮生涯。1960到1962年，在巴塞爾音樂院教授作曲。1967到1972年擔任克利夫蘭樂團首席客座指揮，1971到1975年任BBC交響樂團的首席指揮，也於1971到1977年任紐約愛樂的首席指揮。1977年起布列茲的工作重心移到了巴黎龐畢度中心的「音樂協調和研究學院」(IRCAM)。
本輯中，《火鳥》由BBC交響樂團演奏，1967年首度發行；《春之祭》由克里夫蘭管弦樂團演奏，於1969年發行；《彼得洛希卡》由紐約愛樂管弦樂團演奏，於1972年發行。早年，布列茲的指揮功力被讚譽為「唯有馬勒與理查‧史特勞斯可與之媲美」。他擅長十九世紀以後的作品，無論是印象派或是現代作品都是他專精的領域，曾數度錄製專輯中的三部作品。唯有像他這樣的現代音樂權威，才足以擔任此三部作品的偉大代言人。
